What counts as a full moon

A full moon is an instant, not a night. It is the moment the moon reaches 180° of elongation from the sun — directly opposite, as seen from Earth — and it lasts no longer than any other instant. The times on this page are that exact moment, in UTC.

To the eye the moon looks full for two or three nights either side, because the illuminated fraction changes slowly near the peak: it is still over 98% lit a full day before and after. This is also why the full moon can fall on different calendar dates depending on your time zone — a full moon at 01:30 UTC happened on the previous evening in the Americas.

If the moon were exactly opposite the sun every month we would get a lunar eclipse every month. The orbit is tilted about 5°, so usually the moon passes above or below Earth’s shadow. See theeclipse pages for when it does not.
